Which of the following statements is true regarding the structure of the cell membrane?
Correct answer
C
Rationale
The cell membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer, which consists of two layers of phospholipid molecules. This structure provides the membrane with a barrier that separates the internal environment of the cell from the external environment. The phospholipid bilayer also contains proteins that help regulate the transport of molecules in and out of the cell. Nucleic acids are not the primary components of the cell membrane, so option A is incorrect. The cell membrane is selectively permeable, allowing certain substances to pass through, so option B is incorrect. Proteins are present in the cell membrane but are not the only components, making option D incorrect. Therefore, option C is the correct statement regarding the structure of the cell membrane.
